One fear that many homeowners share is that their home will one day be invaded, whether by a burglar or someone else with evil intent. The truth is that your home is supposed to be safe. It was constructed with exterior walls, sturdy doors, and a ceiling to keep bad things out. Unfortunately, despite these protective features, one group of furry invaders are still managing to get inside homes across Ontario. Of course, we are talking about rodents. Here is everything you need to know about them.
Rodents Are Dangerous
Did you know that rodents can be vectors for dangerous diseases? It’s true. Most rodents live in or frequently visit filthy areas such as sewers, trash heaps, or other locations teeming with bacteria. These bacteria, as well as parasites from these areas, are carried on their fur and even held within their bodies as they enter into homes. Once inside, by traveling about and leaving their bacteria-laden excrement wherever they roam, rodents put you, your family, and your pets at risk of potential sickness and disease. Just a few diseases rodents have been known to carry and transmit include Salmonellosis, Hantavirus, and rat-bite fever. Trust us when we tell you these are not ailments you want to contract.
Rodents Are Destructive
As if it wasn’t enough that rodents are dangerous, they are also destructive. Using their extremely sharp and durable teeth, rodents can chew through many important things throughout your home. You have probably heard of rodents chewing through walls, but did you know that they can also chew through utility piping. This can cause water damage in your home and potentially could lead to termite problems in the future. In addition to chewing through utility piping, rodents have also been known to sever electrical wiring from time to time. Not only is this expensive to fix, but it can spark a fire within your home.
How Rodents Get Inside and How You Can Keep Them Out
In a study, scientists found that mice can squeeze through holes as small as the size of a nickel. All it takes is a hole this size on the exterior of your home for rodents to find their way inside. Your job as a homeowner is to seal up these entry points. This can be done using a caulking gun and some wire mesh. Of course, this is not the only tip we have to keep out rodents, here are some other things we recommend you try.
Keep your grass short and your yard well maintained. This will reduce harborage opportunities for rodents on your property.
Trim back tree branches from your home’s exterior. Some rodents can use close hanging branches to get onto your home’s roof and in through higher entry points.
Make sure your garbage cans have tight-fitting durable lids. Rodents will eat practically anything.
Try to keep your home as clean as possible. A pile of crumbs is a meal for hungry rodents.
Store leftover foods inside airtight glass, plastic, or metal containers, if you don’t want to share them with hungry rodents, that is.
